BARBARA
ANNE LEETUN WILSON of Abbott passed peacefully in her home on September 1, 2023 with her husband, Robert Wilson, by her side. She was born October 14, 1951 in Jackson, Mississippi to Shirley Stephenson and Dudley Leetun. Her father was a cattle buyer and she grew up on ranches in Georgia and Louisiana where she rode horses, barrel raced, and learned the foundations of running her own cattle business, which then became a dream that she fulfilled as an adult.
She married the love of her life, Robert Wayne Wilson, on January 1, 1995.
She was a loyal friend, a strong mentor, and known by the many people who loved her as a person with a servants heart, Barbara made multiple contributions to her community.
When her son Timothy passed away, she donated multiple sides of beef to the food pantry at Texas State Technical College, Waco, Texas. She purchased and donated multiple sets of golf clubs to Bynum High School. She also donated hundreds of pairs of wool winter socks to multiple homeless shelters over the course of several winters. She donated the use of a house to refuges from Hurricane Katrina. When her daughter mentioned to her that a single mom and her daughter were sharing a car, with no heat, to two different jobs in two different counties, she took a used car, had it made to working order, and supplied the car so that incomes could be maintained.
Barbara was the driving force of the Hill County Emergency Service District #2 contracting with CareFlite and Air Evac Lifeteam ambulance services for Hill County. She ensured that ESD #2 residents were provided CareFlite and AEL memberships at no cost from residents’ pockets. She worked with the county 911 coordinator to get a GPS address system in place for the rural areas of Hill County and coordinated the placement of tens of thousands of address signs, she herself personally placing over 3000 address signs at the end of resident driveways across the county. She also worked with various organizations to ensure that Hill County law enforcement dogs were equipped with Kevlar vests. She was instrumental in making sure that all schools, specifically, in Hill County have AED machines in their buildings. She also coordinated CPR and AED training opportunities in the county. She is also the reason that Hill County now has multiple heliports for air ambulances.
Over the years she served the Hill County Republican Party as an Election Clerk, Precinct Chair and Judge, County Platform Committee Chair, Hill County GOP Treasurer, Delegate to many GOP State Conventions; 2007 Appointed Treasurer to Hill County ESD #2 and then ESD #2 President in 2008. She also served as County Convention Chair in 2012 and was an alternate delegate to the 2012 Republican State Convention. She was also a proud member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the American Angus Association, where she served as a delegate to their National Convention.
Barbara was preceded in death by her parents, Shirley and Dudley Leetun and one son, Timothy Wilson.
She is survived by her loving husband of 28 years, Robert of Abbott; three daughters – Terrilin Holz of Haslet, Michelle Davis (Doug) of Haslet, and Toni Rejcek (Shawn) of Abbott; two sons – Matthew Wilson (Kim) of Godley, Chad Wilson (Marsha) of Phoenix, Arizona; 12 grandchildren – Lauren Helmberger (Jared), Meghan Holz (Tyler), Jeff Davis, Christine and Cameron Rejcek, Elijah, Averly, Delani, Everlee, Luke, Alamay, and Scarlett Wilson; two great-grandchildren – Elliot and Theodore Helmberger; one sister, Linda Carr (Steve) of Blairsville, Georgia; and one brother, Victor Anderson of Madisonville, TX; as well as many cousins, nieces, nephews, and close friends who lived near her. Her fiesta (as Robert called it) spirit and fearlessness will be missed by those who love her.
Barbara believed that people should visit the living, so no formal services will be held. A party to celebrate Barbara’s birthday will be held in October, date pending. In lieu of flowers, the family asks for trees to be planted in Barbara’s name or donations to be made in her name to the Texas Angus Auxiliary Scholarship with the Texas Angus Association (texasangus.com).
Our hearts rejoice for her eternal reward, however she will be missed beyond measure.
