Maura Gilchrist Maltese passed away on February 20, 2022 after a yearlong battle with cancer. Maura was born on June 21, 1955 in Salamanca, NY and her family moved to Bellmore, NY shortly after that. She was the youngest child of Thomas Gilchrist and Rita Campbell and she is survived by her loving husband Carl Maltese and her two sisters, Patricia Morahan (Patrick) and Monica Bennett. She had four nieces and nephews, Thomas Brown, Joanna Brown-Russo, Jeremiah Bennett and Elizabeth Morahan as well as her Godson Richard Colling and her lifelong friend Tina Nicolls.
Maura graduated from Mephem HS in Bellmore, NY and then from SUNY Stony Brook with a Bachelor's degree in History Education. She returned to college several years later and studied at Hofstra University for an MBA in IT/Computer Science. She began her career working at New York Life Insurance Co. and then while working on her Master's degree she worked at Long Island Lighting Co. which later became National Grid. Maura retired from National Grid in 2012.
After retirement Maura & Carl moved to Smyrna, DE and enjoyed traveling and spending part of the winters in Florida.
Anyone who called themselves Maura's friend knows the amazing person she was, how her smile and bright blue eyes would light up the room when she walked into it, and how she was the person who everyone would want to spend time with. She fought hard, and right up to the very end, thought she would beat this disease. She was a pillar of strength who would always call people out when they were wrong, while still showing them how
caring and loving she was.
Her husband Carl's devotion to her was evident throughout their marriage, and even more so through the past year. Carl was with her every step of the way taking care of her and showing her every way he could how much he loved her, and she was so grateful to have him.
Maura was cremated and her services will be privately held.
